I’m kind of almost over wondering why so many struggle with influencing and implementing change, and am more focused on the how of alternative approaches. I’m not on my own. For many organisations there is a negative shared experience of using existing approaches to change. A different way is required, because we now have all the ingredients for a new recipe.

Melbourne Females in IT & T

I enjoyed speaking at the inaugural Melbourne Females in IT & T event for International Women’s Day last week. My core theme was: Change is constant, life is change, change starts with the self. In my experience there are still too many women asking for permission to live the lives they want to lead and to do the things they want to do.

When faced with large, complex programs, many people don’t know where to start. I ‘cut to the chase’ by asking critical questions that speed design and implementation.

How to reach the land of opportunity

They don’t teach business in communications programs and they don’t teach communications in business schools. So where do we find business-savvy communicators? Relevant communicators in today’s environment use their skills to support business outcomes differently. They need commercial acumen, consultative and diagnostic skills and the ability to increase their value to partners in real business terms. So how did I do this in a cost-cutting, high-communications-demand environment with a team that also needed to shift focus?

If change is the new normal then why not normalise it?

Speaking with a group of 28 professionals at a recent Melbourne Water Master class was energising and reaffirming. It crystallised my own belief about change. During the session, which covered some big topics such as engagement in an era of constant change, influencing stakeholders in the new networked environment, and how to develop a social media enabled enterprise, one common element kept coming up.
